The past simple tense is essential for talking about actions and events that happened in the past. Whether you’re sharing stories, describing experiences, or recalling moments, the past simple helps you express it all clearly.
How to Form the Past Simple
For regular verbs, add “-ed” to the base form of the verb.
Examples:
- I walked to school yesterday.
- She cooked a delicious meal.
- They played football last weekend.
Irregular verbs, however, do not follow this rule and have unique past forms.
Examples:
- I went to the park.
- He saw a movie.
- They ate pizza.
Negative Sentences
To make a sentence negative, use “did not” (didn’t) followed by the base verb.
Examples:
- I did not (didn’t) finish my homework.
- She didn’t go to the party.
- We didn’t see the sunset.
Questions
To form a question, start with “did” followed by the subject and the base verb.
Examples:
- Did you call your friend?
- Did she enjoy the book?
- Did they visit the museum?
Common Uses of the Past Simple
- Completed Actions: To describe something that happened and is finished.

- Sequences of Events: To describe events in the order they happened.
- She woke up, brushed her teeth, and went to work.
