English expressions are phrases used frequently in everyday speech that don’t always mean what the words say literally. Here are the main types:

Idiomatic Expressions

These don’t mean exactly what they say.

  • Break the ice: Start a conversation or make things less awkward.
  • Hit the nail on the head: Get something exactly right.

Slang Expressions

Informal words used in casual conversation.

  • Cool: Stylish or impressive.
  • Hang out: Spend time together.

Proverbs

Short sayings that offer advice or truth.

  • Actions speak louder than words: What you do is more important than what you say.
  • Better late than never: It’s better to do something late than not at all.

Common Expressions

  • Bite the bullet: Do something unpleasant you’ve been avoiding.
  • Burn the midnight oil: Stay up late working.
  • Let the cat out of the bag: Accidentally reveal a secret.
  • It’s raining cats and dogs: Raining heavily.
  • Once in a blue moon: Something that happens very rarely.

To learn these expressions:

  • Read, listen, and watch content in English.
